‘Click’ And Capture Smell Instead Of Images
A camera which can capture smell has been developed by researchers in the UK. This new camera is capable of recording smells instead of images. According to Guardian, designer Amy Radcliffe at Central Saint Martins has invented this gadget which is named Madeleine. The gadget is bent on providing meaningful sensory dimension to storing our emotional memories.
“The sense of smell has a direct link to emotional memory. It is the sense we react to most instinctively, and the furthest away from being stored or replicated digitally,” said Radcliffe to the newspaper.
A funnel which is attached to the camera is placed over the object or environment a person wishes to capture. After that a pump sucks the air across an odour trap made from tenax, which is a porous polymer resin that absorbs the particles that comprise the smell.
The time needed for capturing the smell may vary according to the environment. It may take a few minutes to capture the ravishing scent of fresh oranges to almost 24 hours to store the aroma of an atmosphere.
“It’s like a huge electric nose. It processes the particles and produces a graph-like formula that makes up the smell. From this formula you can artificially recreate the precise odour,” she added.
